Simple phrases in french

June 19, 2008

I was thinking about ideas for starting a foreign language theme on my blog earlier. I’m facinated by languages, but just don’t have a need to learn any of them as I don’t need to use them in my job or at home.

So I figured, I want to learn them, there are people out there that will want to learn them as well, so I figured I could do a little post each week with my chosen language and some simple phrases you’d need if you crash landed in that country. I’ll be using language learning software to teach myself as it lets me learn at my own rate, and in my spare time.

Here goes then. I decided to learn french this week as we’ve got a french exchange student starting at work next week and I’d like to be able to greet her in french at least.

  • English: Hello
  • French: Bonjour
  • English: Whats your name?
  • French: Quel est votre nom?
  • English: My name is George.
  • French: Mon nom est George.
  • English: How are you?
  • French: Comment vas-tu?
  • English: I am good, thanks.
  • French: Je suis bien, merci.

Out of disaster comes happiness

June 10, 2008

So last week I had a house warming party round my new flat (the paint had hardly dried on the walls!). Unfortunately my best friend managed to spill vindaloo all over my bed. (I’ve just about forgiven her don’t worry.) I ended up sleeping on the couch, and subsequently woke up with a aching back. I longed for my bed!

Problem was as I was rather drunk at the point she spilt her meal on my sleeping place, I (stupidly) decided to leave it till the next morning to clean up before going to work. Bad idea. I woke up to the flat smelling of stale curry, which was bad enough. Anyway I managed to strip the bed and bung the covers in the wash, but the curry had soaked through to the mattress and because its a foam mattress it absorbes liquids really really well.

A quick hose down later and I realised the mattress wasn’t going to clean up very well, the curry was just too ingrained into the foam.

So whilst I was at work, I was idle for some time and decided to look at mattresses on the Internet. I came across many places that sold them, then I discovered memoryfoammattress.co.uk which seemed good, especially as I wanted another foam mattress. In the end I went for a Memory Foam Deluxe 500 Mattress.

Anyway it arrived a couple of days ago, so I “installed” it, and I have to say I’m bloody impressed with it. Its more comfortable than the last one, it appears to “mould” itself to me better, and I certainly fall asleep faster on it than I used to.

I should be so lucky!

Loads of people (me excluded!) get lucky playing online bingo every day. But I dare say this actress wasn’t expecting a £500 win whilst filming a commericial!

The ad, which was produced by the free online bingo site run by Littlewoods, shows an outtake from a shoot in which the actress wins a rather large bonus on top of her paycheck. It’s the kind of win we all dream of, but this lucky TV star wins without even realising what she’s doing! Ah well – I’ll just be hoping the balls fall as kindly for me.

Bingoers claim win in the courts!

Who would have thought it? An oral agreement between 3 sisters was deemed binding by a judge in Chester.

As many of you bingo regulars out there will know, it’s not unusual to make friendly agreements to share winnings should one of your party get lucky. But when one of the Sexton sisters decided she wanted to keep all the winnings for herself, things got ugly.

The BBC report that the big win came at the Buckingham Bingo Palace in Hunts Cross, Liverpool, in June 2007. The judge ruled that the winnings should be split equally as agreed before the balls were read.

With many players now opting to play in an online bingo game, how long will it be before sharing of winnings agreements become obsolete? Have you ever shared a big win with a friend? How about online bingo?
